My Laoag sandboarding experience
is definitely the hottest experience I had because we did it at 12:30 in the
afternoon. That is with the sun up in the sky, smiling at us. We knew that it
is hot but we could have used a little advice from our La Paz contact that it
is more fun to do in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Anyway, as I mentioned, do your
sand dune adventure in the morning or in the afternoon to avoid becoming a
sizzling tourist.
Our La Paz sandboarding contact offered
to pick us from Laoag city and to take us back afterwards. Sounds like we got a
nice deal. He picked us with his 4x4 around 11:30 in the morning so we had an
early taste of our 4x4 ride along the way.
Once we get to the place, all I can
think of is taking a bath in the nearby shore. Yes just right after the desert
(they call it desert) is the South China Sea.
The driver asked if we were ready
and of course, we were. The sun was at its hottest so it was great. We boarded
his 4x4 and he asked us to hold tight. Every time he was about to make a swirl
and extreme turns, he warns us to hold tight- which was good. After driving for
about 5 minutes, he stopped his 4x4 under a tree and asked us to take some
pictures of ourselves while he finishes his lunch.
After he ate his lunch, he asked
if we would want to try sandboarding, which we said yes- of course! He warned
us that the sand is too hot. He drove for another 5 minutes causing us to say “ahhs”
and “ohhs” then he stopped on the shoreline. He took a picture of us with our
hands in the air- yeah! We look so happy, satisfied, and fried.
As we head back to the start
line, he said the drive was over and he asked us again if we really want to try
sandboarding. He warned us that the sand is too hot. We still said yes! He had
no choice but to get the sandboarding equipment and his support staff.
Apparently, he was right; the
sand was hot since it was midday. Luckily, for me, I am wearing a shoe but my
two lucky travel mates are not. We tried doing it once then we call day.
Lesson learned- wear shoes before
visiting La Paz sand dunes.
Experience level: awesome!
