When we say clock tower, you might think I am referring to Big Ben in London but we are not. I am actually talking about the most historical clock tower in Hong Kong, one that was built and completed in 1921. Hong Kong’s clock tower is located on Kowloon and is more popular with its Chinese name: Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower. The tower has clock on each side and all are working synchronically. Since it started working in 1921, it has been said that this historical clock hasn’t failed passersby when they need to check the time.
The Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower sits perfectly in the middle of the Kowloon square where it towers new buildings and skyscrapers. It is one of the oldest landmarks not only in Kowloon but in Hong Kong and is one of the most visited towers in the country. Although it only stands at 44 meters, the Clock Tower is being visited by tourists and locals alike especially at night to catch a glimpse of the famous Symphony of Lights where in all the building surrounding the Clock Tower do a lighting performance. Warning: Look for the best spot as early as 7 in the evening or else you’ll be watching a photographer’s back all night.
Aside from Symphony of Lights, it also has its own version of Hollywood Walk of Fame with Avenue of Stars where Hong Kong celebrities’ names are printed on the floor. If you love taking pictures, you can start here and you’re definitely get amazed on how good are the views especially once you get to the tower. You can a full view of the Cultural Center, the Star Ferry boat, the Peninsula Hotel, the Hong Kong harbour, the whole Hong Kong Island and rest at the urban park around the clock tower.
The good thing is the Clock Tower is surrounded with grand hotels that are within 5 kilometres thus accommodation in Kowloon to experience it won’t be a problem at all. These hotels offer great accommodations and great food hence after a well spent day in Kowloon and taking photos, you can relax at home away from home. Among the hotels you can choose from are Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel and Towers, Marco Polo Hong Kong Hotel and Holiday Inn.
The Tsim Sha Tsui Clock entrance fee is £1.35. What good thing about it is, after visiting the Clock Tower, you can also check out the Kowloon City Museum at the back of the Tower or spend the next day at the Kowloon Leisure Park. Also, if you have your kids with you, then it might be a good idea to spend the day at the Hong Kong Ocean Park and spend the night at the Clock Tower and watch the Symphony of Lights.
