HealthDay News reported today that
minor invasive cosmetic procedures are nearly risk-free.
According to a new study, there
were no major complications associated to minor cosmetic surgeries. Less than
one percent of patients reported minor complications such as bruising,
swelling, redness or darkening of the skin after having minor operations.
The researchers reviewed the results
of more than 20,000 minor cosmetic procedures such as fillers, neurotoxins and the
use laser performed by dermatologists. 23 dermatologists from eight centers
across the country were included in the study.
For filler procedures, 0.52
percent reported complications. Fillers has a higher complication rate compared
to laser or neurotoxins because it is more invasive according to the researchers.
Dr. Murad Alam ,
a professor of dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of
Medicine and a physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, said the result of
the study would help patients have a peace of mind. “The message for patients
is that if you are thinking of getting one of these procedures, you are not
indulging in something drastic or high-risk."
Dr. Alam
further added that it is safer to undergo different minor cosmetic surgeries
rather than getting one big cosmetic procedure that might be too risky.
The complete findings of the study were published in the journal JAMA
Dermatology.
