Aside from Calle Crisologo, the dancing fountain at night
and the numerous old mansions that you can feast your eyes on, the one thing
that makes Vigan special is their Vigan Empanada (stuffed bread).
Vigan Empanada is a food that Vigan is known for. Since it
is my first time to visit Vigan, it is the first thing that I looked for.
Apparently, there is one known “emapanadahan” (Empanada
maker) around Calle Crisologo. The name of the stall is Irene’s Emapanada. The
place looks like your regular roadside eatery, small, few tables inside and
some chairs. It is not noticeable during the day and they only open around
noon. For a great experience, try visiting the place around 6 in the evening
when chairs and tables are set in the middle of Calle Crisologo. The ambiance
is inviting and the experience is definitely something!
The first thing I noticed about Irene’s empanada is the
color- it is not too orange. The shape is the same, like a half folded dough
and it contains Vigan’s original langgonisa (local sausage). It also contains
some eggs and some vegetables.
The dough is deep fried along with its stuffed content. What
I loved about Irene’s Empanada is the crunchiness of the dough. It is also not
oily and it tastes well. Eat it along with “sukang iloko” (local vinegar) then
take a gulp of ice cold mountain dew. Solve!
This refreshing merienda will only cost you P70.
