Researchers from the University of California San Francisco
analyzed 54,911 abortions between 2009 and 2010. The participants of
the study were followed for six weeks after having an abortion.
The result of the study showed that only 2.1 percent of the participants had complications with 0.23 percent having a major complication. Among the major complications they experienced were blood transfusion or surgery and requires hospitalization.
According
to the authors of the study, abortion complications are very rare that
it is safer than doing a wisdom tooth extractions (7 percent
complication rate) or tonsillectomies (9 percent complication rate).
Ushma Upadhyay, PhD, MPH,
an assistant professor at Advancing New Standards in Reproductive
Health (ANSIRH), a program of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology
and Reproductive Sciences at UCSF said, "Our study had very complete
follow-up data on all of the women in it, and we still found a very low
complication rate."
The
researcher added, "Abortion is very safe as currently performed, which
calls into question the need for additional regulations that purportedly
aim to improve safety."
97
percent of the participants had abortions in outpatient clinics or in a
doctor's office while three percent took place in hospitals.
"But
the researchers said that these restrictions were likely to make women
travel further to get abortions or induce them on their own using unsafe
methods, both of which may increase the risks for women."
